Basketball Techniques

Basketball technique is a set of actions and movements necessary directly for the game and allows you to solve problems on the court. Technique on the game can be divided into two parts: offensive technique (movement and possession of the ball) and defensive technique (movement and countering the opponent).

Offensive Techniques

Movement of players on the court is the foundation of the game. Good movement with and without the ball can greatly facilitate interaction with partners.

Basic elements of movement:

  • Running. A basketball player must move competently, know how to “switch” speed, move in different positions;
  • Walking. Used to slow down the game and change positions;
  • Jumping. It is possible to perform jumps with one or two feet. Jumping is used to fight for rebounds under the boards, to make the shot. Bear in mind that jumping with the ball without a subsequent shot is an offense;
  • Stops and turns. These two elements are used to be able to pull away from the opponent for further attacking actions. Offensive ball-handling techniques include the following techniques:
  • ball reception. Receiving the ball allows full possession of the ball for subsequent offensive actions. Is the starting position for running, throwing or passing. Receive the ball with either one or both hands;
  • passing. A technique by which the ball can be delivered to a teammate to continue the attack. Depending on the game situation uses a variety of ways to pass the ball: two hands from the chest (used in relatively simple game situation in a short or medium distance), two hands from above (if the tight custody of the medium distance), two hands from below (if the ball at the level below the waist for a short distance), one hand from above (if necessary to send the ball to a fairly long distance), from the floor (if the opponent custody of the medium distance);
  • Dribbling. This technique allows the basketball player to move with the ball on the court for offensive actions. Mandatory condition is a one-handed dribble, two-handed dribble is a violation. Depending on the game situation the ball is played with a change of speed (to break away from an opponent) or direction (to beat the defender);
  • throws into the ring. To win the game you need to score points, and ways to score a huge number of points, as well as throwing techniques. The main ones are under-the-shield shots, mid-range and long-range shots from static position, throws on the move, catching the ball in flight.

Defense Techniques

One of the tenets of basketball is that defense wins championships. Defending your ring is an important and integral part of basketball. The basic elements of defense techniques include:

  • Stance. Competent positioning of the player on defense allows you to quickly respond to your opponent’s actions, intelligently confront the attack of the basket. The technique is mainly used by putting one foot forward and bent legs, which allows you to guard the player with the ball and prevent him from passing or attacking the ring. This posture allows much better maneuverability on the court on defense;
  • Kicking the Ball. A technique used to hinder the offensive player’s actions. To do this, the defender makes shallow lunges toward the opponent with an outstretched hand, then retreats to the starting position;
  • Intercepting the ball. The technique involves interrupting an opponent’s attack with subsequent possession of the ball. Here, mainly successful interception is achieved through the quick action and reaction of the player. Interception can be performed both when the ball is passed and when the opponent handles the ball;
  • Block shot. Applies when the opponent throws the ball around the ring. Here the main thing is to hit the ball on an upward trajectory or if the ball is in the hands of the opponent. When covering the throw, it is necessary to correctly calculate the time for the jump and take into account the movement of the hands, because this action very often leads to personal violations;
  • Ball rebounding. A very important element of technique in basketball, performed a large number of times per game. It is very important to have the right position to make it difficult for your opponent to rebound the ball, which allows you to possess the ball yourself.
